Moving to Germany is exciting, but it can also feel a bit overwhelming – a new city, a new language, and new systems to figure out. Whether you’re a student, professional, or relocating with your family, these first steps will help you settle in smoothly.

Step 1: Register at Your Local Residents’ Office

If you’re staying in Germany for more than three months, the first thing to do is register at your city hall (Einwohnermeldeamt / Bürgeramt). Take your passport, rental contract, and any important documents (like birth or marriage certificates). You’ll receive a registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung). Keep it safe – you’ll need it for many other steps, like opening a bank account or signing contracts.

Step 2: Get Your Tax ID (Steuer-ID)

After registration, your tax ID will be sent to you by mail automatically. You’ll need this for work contracts, bank accounts, and official forms. Keep it safe – it’s a one-time document and not easily replaced if lost.

Step 3: Open a Bank Account

A bank account in Germany makes everyday life much easier for salary payments, rent, phone plans, and insurance, with options ranging from big banks like Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, and Sparkasse to online banks like N26, Bunq, and Tomorrow, and you will usually need your passport, registration certificate, and tax ID to open the account.
